Week 12

This hopefully is the final week of practice before the students begin to make something.  They are so ready to get going.  I can remember starting out welding how long it seemed to take before you got to actually make something.  I think the students will do good.

Week 11

This week we ar practicing sticking two pieces of scrap metal together both with the arc welder and the mig welder.  It is important that this skill is mastered in order to start building projects.

Week 10

This week we were in the shop all week practcing with the arc and mig welders.  The students practiced running beads on scrap metal.  Towards the end of the week I think many of the students had finally started to get the hang of things.  It's not easy.

Week 9

This week we started the class on mig welding.  THis is a different kind of welding from arc.  The students had to take a safety quiz and them we went to the shop to use the mig welder.

Week 8

This week we practiced using the arc welder all week.  This is a very difficult skill which takes a lot of practice to master.  I tried to help many students start the beads without sticking them.  Its hard to do this because when you weld you are in total darkness because of the dark helmet you have to wear.  Once you strike the bead you can see.  It just takes lots of practce

Week 7

This week we introduced arc welding.  I alkd about the arc welder and what we use it for.  The students took a safety quiz and then we went to the shop to show them how to use it.

Week 6

This week we practiced everyday with the cutting torch so the students would get very good with it.  It can be a very dangerous tool to use and it is very important to use it safely and properly.

Week 5

This week we discussed the cutting torch.  We talked bout what the cutting torch was used for and when t use it.  We discussed how to use it safely.  Then we took the saftey quiz on the cutting torch.  This quiz seemed a little more difficult for the students and many of them had to redo it several times before they go to use the torch.

Week 4

This week we taught about the drill press.  I talked to the class about what the drill press was used for and showed them how to use the drill press.

Aftertaking the safety quiz on the drill press, I took the stdents to the shop and let them use it.

Week 3

This week we taught the class about the power grinder.  I demonstrated how to use the power grinder safely.

I gave a safety quiz.  I took the students to the shop and they got to usethe power grinder.

Week 2

This week I got to talke about the power drll and show the class how to use it safely and properly. 

We had a quiz over the power drill safety.   Those that passed i got to take to the shop and let them have a chance to use the power drill.

Week !

This week I talked to the class about the proper clothing to wear while working in the shop.  I showed them what I wear in the shop - denin or cotton clothing and no nylon.  Clothng should not have frays either.  It is also important to not have long strings like in hoodies that could get hooked in equipment or catch on fire when welding. 

We had a quiz over clothing safety.
